Castrol was founded by Charles 'Cheers' Wakefield in 1899 as 'CC Wakefield & Company'. Wakefield left the Vacuum Oil company to develop lubricants for trains and heavy machinery. He quickly turned his attention to the automotive and aviation industries, where his team discovered that adding castor oil (castor beans) produced a perfect lubricant. They named this new product 'Castrol'.
This led to Castrol being used to lubricate the engine of the plane that made the first transatlantic flight in 1919, quickly making the brand famous. In 1960, the company name was changed to Castrol Ltd., and in 2000, it became a subsidiary of BP.
Today, Castrol remains a leading player in the production, distribution, and sale of lubricants and related services for various sectors, including the automotive industry, industrial applications, marine, aviation, and oil extraction and production.
The core of Castrol's success lies in Wakefield's philosophy: collaborating with customers to develop the best solutions. This vision continues to drive Castrol's innovation and growth to meet the needs of the rapidly changing global market.
"Castrol is more than just oil, it's liquid technology "
