CASTROL

World leader in the production, distribution and sale of premium lubricants, lubricating greases and related services for customers in the automotive, industrial, marine, aerospace, oil extraction and production markets. Going back to 1899, Charles 'Cheers' Wakefield founded a new company called Wakefield & Company. The company sold lubricants for trains and heavy machinery. Shortly after the turn of the century, two new motorised machines caught the attention of Wakefield and his team: the automobile and the aeroplane.
The company began to develop lubricants specifically for these machines: oils that were thin enough to do their work during a cold start and thick enough to keep functioning at very high temperatures. Wakefield's researchers discovered that adding a quantity of castor oil, a vegetable oil from the fruit of the miracle tree, was the solution and named the new product 'Castrol'.
Wakefield's increasingly profitable business then developed a wider range of products, creating new oils designed for the specific engines of different car manufacturers.
By 1960 the name of the motor oil had become more famous than that of the company's legendary founder, so 'CC Wakefield & Company' was renamed 'Castrol Ltd'.
In 1966 Castrol was bought by the Burmah Oil Company. Burmah-Castrol was acquired by BP in 2000 and the Castrol brand became part of the BP Group.
The company's success is largely due to Charles Wakefield's original philosophy. He relied on the input and encouragement of his customers to develop his new Castrol oils, understanding that working in partnership was the best way for both parties to succeed.
