The logo of Eni, a 6-legged dog: a symbol that relates the company to their values, courage and innovation. For them, this means combining the loyalty of the past with confidence in the future.
On 3 April 1926, AGIP, freely translated as the General Italian Oil Company, was founded in Italy. Its core business was to explore for and produce oil and gas deposits in the country. All AGIP shares were at that time in the hands of the government or closely related institutions. Italy was short of raw materials, so AGIP's results were very disappointing.
During the second world war AGIP discovered a gas field, but they did not take it into production. After the second world war the government of Italy decided to close down AGIP due to lack of success and appointed Enrico Mattei to the task. He saw the potential of the field and convinced the government to let AGIP survive. A good decision it turned out!
In 1949 AGIP drilled a large gas field, a subsidiary company built a network of pipelines to transport the natural gas to customers. However, the demand for gas was insufficient and Mattei decided to establish Società Termoelettrica Italiana. The power plant in Tavazzano was the first in Italy to use gas as a fuel. The combination of the gas discoveries and Mattei's decisiveness eventually led to a successful enterprise.
On 10 February 1953 Eni was established, incorporating all of AGIP's activities. They received the exclusive right to drill for oil and gas in the Po Valley and to build a pipeline network.
Today, Eni offers lubricants to the automotive, agricultural, industrial and marine sectors. The Eni brand has over 33000 employees and is present in 73 countries.
