WD-40 was invented over 60 years ago by three employees of the Rocket Chemical Company. From a small lab in San Diego, California, they were looking to create a line of anti-corrosion solvents and degreasers for use in the aerospace industry. Leading the team was chemist Norm Larsen, who was looking for a moisture-repelling solution for NASA that would protect the Atlas space rocket from rust and corrosion. Larsen and his team tried 40 times to get the world famous formula right, that's how the product WD-40 got its name, Water Displacement - 40.
After a while, workers took the product home and discovered many more uses for it. This led to Larsen experimenting with putting the WD-40 Multi-Use product into aerosol cans, with the very first can sold in shops in 1958.
Within two years the company had doubled in size, and in 1969 the Rocket Chemical Company was renamed after their single product, WD-40.
The formula is a well-kept secret, but the product remains the same today as it was when it was invented. Every day, people keep discovering new uses for the famous blue and yellow canister.
